A flashing is a sheet metal strip shaped and attached to a roof for reinforcing, strengthening, aesthetic or weather proofing reasons. These would typically be at joints or angles where the roof changes angle or meets up with a different building material. Flashings are used as weather proofing shields around protruding objects such as pipes and chimneys.
